The palm of her hand smoothed over a jiggly belly that was still recovering from a nine month stretch. She missed the feeling of Logan's heels up under her ribs, the way he stretched against her pelvis, and the fluttery feeling she'd get when he had the hiccups. Anthony and her had tried for over a year so when Logan finally came along she cherished every day she was pregnant. Morning sickness, cramps, weight gain, none of this mattered when she thought of the little life growing inside her.
But something awful had happened to them.
Neva rocked herself gently as she sat in a sparse room that had been called hers for the last two weeks. She hadn't ventured outside yet. Save for using the toilet or taking a shower, she took her meals in this room, slept in this room and observed from this room. Her chair faced the open doorway that she insisted remained open at all times and since she was quiet and well behaved, the staff had so far obliged. Humming a hushed lullaby, her dark eyes watched the hallway outside, following the forms of the bodies that passed by. Bad people were everywhere and she had to be vigilant. She had to move through this recovery process as quickly as possible in order to find her family before it was too late.
